Java Porcupine: an Indonesian Endemic Porcupines

The Sunda porcupine, Java porcupine, Hystrix javanica, belonging to the Hystrix genus in the Hystricidae family is ones of the Old World porcupines (Lunde and Aplin, 2008). There are eight porcupine species of Acanthion, Hystric and Thecurus subgenus in the Hystrix genus of porcupines. Sunda Porcupine is one of porcupine species belonging to the Acanthion subgenus which endemic to Indonesia. This herbivore species is only found on Java, Bali, Sumbawa, Flores, Lombok, Madura, and Tonahdjampea islands of Indonesia (Van Weers 1979, 1983; Woods and Kilpatrick 2005).
